What is a funeral pre-arrangement?

A funeral pre-arrangement is a contract you sign during your lifetime to plan and prepay your own funeral. The funds are legally protected in a trust account regulated by the OPC (Office de la protection du consommateur).

Death is the subject we talk about least, yet preparing for it is one of the most thoughtful things you can do for your family. A funeral pre-arrangement lets you do exactly that — at your own pace, without pressure.

Precise definition

A funeral pre-arrangement is an official contract through which you plan — and optionally prepay — your funeral while still living. This contract is signed with a licensed funeral home and governed by the Act respecting prearranged funeral services and sepultures (RLRQ, chapter A-23.001). It is distinct from a will: where a will governs the distribution of your assets, a pre-arrangement governs the specific organization of your funeral.

What a pre-arrangement typically includes

  • Your chosen disposition type (cremation, burial, ecological option)
  • Type of ceremony (religious, secular, intimate, large celebration)
  • Casket or urn selection
  • Music, readings and floral preferences
  • Burial or ash scattering preferences
  • Prepaid amount and payment terms

Who is it for?

Contrary to common belief, pre-arrangements are not only for the elderly or ill. Many people in their forties and fifties choose to plan after experiencing the death of a parent or close friend. Planning is simpler — and less expensive — when done without urgency.

How it works in practice

You meet with an advisor (in person or remotely) who guides you through your options. Together, you define a plan that matches your values and budget. You then sign a contract with the partner funeral home. Your payment — whether in full or in installments — is deposited in a trust fund administered by a third party. You receive a copy of your contract, and a copy is given to your family or estate executor.

The difference from funeral insurance

Funeral insurance is a financial product: you pay a monthly premium, and a lump sum is paid at your death to cover (in theory) funeral expenses. A pre-arrangement is different: it is a direct service contract with a funeral home. Your wishes are recorded in writing, your money is protected in a trust fund, and your family faces no difficult decisions in the 24 hours after your death.

The benefits for your family

Losing a loved one is one of life's most difficult experiences. In the first hours, your family will need to make dozens of decisions — service type, casket choice, death notices, music. A pre-arrangement spares them that burden. They know exactly what you wanted, and they can focus on what truly matters: supporting one another.

Can a pre-arrangement be modified?

Yes. Quebec law gives you the right to modify or cancel your contract. Within 10 days of signing, you have the right to cancel without fees and receive a full refund. After that period, modifications remain possible under your contract terms. Your advisors can guide you through this process at no cost.
